Client work: Diverse project opportunities available for freelancers

We are being frequently asked what type of project opportunities NeXec has to offer for freelance entrepreneurs. The question is very valid as our client engagements vary considerably from one case to another.

Roughly speaking, our client engagements can be categorized into four project types:

(1)    The first project type includes program and project management roles at clients’ business transformation programs. These engagements are typically full-time allocations and contracts are often rather long – over a year in length. For these engagements, clients are looking for professionals, who have considerable experience in executing complex transformations from business and technology perspectives. In these roles, professionals are expected to work as part of the client program organization, and often vendor management is also a key aspect of successful project delivery and transformation execution.

(2)    The second line of work includes various interim roles to fill a gap in client’s organization. The reason for an interim position to become available may arise due to a sudden loss of an employee, recruitment challenges or organizational changes. In an interim client engagement, client needs the professional to become a part of the organization as she was on the payroll. Interim roles are often full-time, and the objective is to replace the person after a certain timeframe.

(3)    The third project type includes diverse demanding expert roles to complement the expertise of client’s own organization. Typically, these roles are tied to specific development project and can include business, design, and technology expertise. These client engagements can last from couple of months up to a couple of years depending on the development program context.

(4)    The fourth line of work includes shorter advisory engagements. In these projects, client has a clearly defined challenge for which the client needs external expertise. Advisory projects include strategy definition and sparring, current state analysis, roadmap definition, system audits and analysis, and vendor selection to name a few.

The majority of NeXec engagements are long, over one year in length, and full-time or near full-time rather than shorter up to six months and part-time engagements. Long client engagements provide stable revenues for freelance entrepreneurs and enable planning next client engagement well in advance. In addition, longer engagements offer the possibility to familiarize with the client’s business and witness concrete benefits of the work. However, we are constantly offering opportunities for freelancers for shorter and part-time engagements, which provide the possibility to solve interesting client challenges and learn from diverse client situations.
